Cloves—the dried flower buds of a tropical tree—are a highly aromatic and flavorful spice. They're more powerful than other warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice, so less of this ingredient is recommended than others. It's used in spiced desserts as well as many traditional Indian dishes, being one of the components of garam masala, and is also often added to pickle brines.
